Lesson details
- Show the students these images of grain storage and collection from my visit to Doodlakine.
- Brainstorm and record on whiteboard all of the grains that are grown in Australia. They should come up with ten. Refer to teacher background sheet for details about grains in Australia.
- Place students in teams of three. Allocate each team a grain from the brainstorm class list. Students complete the worksheet activity using iPads to conduct their research and complete the following tasks - identify where in Australia your grain is grown and indicate this on the map, list five foods that contain your grain, identify products sold in supermarkets that contain the grain.
- Students present their findings to the class. On large map of Australia record the grain and region.
- Give each team of students a small container of pulses and cereals. Sort the seeds into - pulses, cereals and those they are unsure of. Use Cereal and Pulse identification sheet to assist.

5. Choose two types of grains from your collection and set up your own investigation to see if they will sprout.
6. Take two small take away containers. Use masking tape and black text to label your container. Place some cotton wool in the bottom of the container. Sprinkle your grain over the cotton wool. Use the spray bottle to lightly soak your grain and cotton wool.
7. Place your containers in the wet area. Check your grains everyday. Record how many seeds sprout each day in a table. After a few weeks make a line graph of your findings.
8. Bring your containers to Science so that we can do some further investigating.
